Flood: Okowa presents N35.2m grant, utility van to fish farmers
Delta state government has presented a Toyota Hilux van and a cheque of N35.2 million to 234 fish farmers in Camp 74 fish farm settlement to alleviate losses incurred during recent flooding in the state. The sum of N150,000 was each presented to the 234 fish farmers of the camp.
Ifeanyi Okowa, the state governor, who presented the cheque and the vehicle van to the farmers explained that the gesture was in fulfilment of his promise to the farmers when he visited the camp few days after the flooding occurred to ascertain the extent of damage in the farm.
The governor who said the state government was encouraged by the way the youths formed themselves into an association to engage in a meaningful form of livelihood, stressed that “ You are already a source of inspiration to other youths and the government is impressed in the way you engaged yourselves without any support from government to have a meaningful sources of livelihood.”
Speaking further, he said, “The sum of N150,000 we are giving you today is not a loan but a grant, you are not expected to pay back, it is to enable you buy feeds for your fingerlings until you get your stock back. l have directed the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources to link you up with the state Micro credit and Small Scale Scheme where you can easily access loan to develop your business.”
He also encouraged them to attract other youths to the place to see what they are doing as this will motivate them to be involved. By this, more youths of the state will be engaged, he said. He also said, “l believe in peer influence and know that you farmers can do more for other youths. The Hilux Van will help you to transport your fishes to the market and bring fish feeds to the farm.”
In a brief remark, Upbright Nwenneka, chairman of Camp 74 Fish Farmers Association, commended the governor for his prompt response to their plight and in fulfilling his promises to them.
Nwenneka assured the governor of their support for his administration’s youths empowerment programmes.
