Intricacies of exporting yam
With the hundreds of millions of Africans living in other continents, there is a growing demand for African foods in these countries and exporting items such as yams is a very profitable business.
But international best practices which entail choosing the appropriate yam tubers, preparation of the tubers, packaging in specially designed boxes, and arrangement in pallets, fumigation, air and shipping methods must be followed carefully. A lack of understanding of these intricacies could result in losses to the exporter as the exports may be rejected at the port of entry by the regulatory officials.
BusinessDay will be publishing the intricacies of exporting raw yams and other foodstuffs in coming editions.
