Maize farmers in Kano optimistic of bumper harvest
Despite the difficulties being experienced in accessing farming inputs, maize farmers in the North-West State of Kano, are optimistic of recording a bumper harvest in the farming season.
The optimism expressed by the farmers has to do with impressive performance of maize plants at the farmers across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state.
Checks conducted by BusinessDay at the Karufi Farm Gate, in Kura Local Government Area, where fresh maize is sold to various categories of dealers, confirmed this optimism expressed by the farmers.
Commenting on the anticipated bumper harvest, some of the farmers attributed their optimism to the steady and well distributed rainfall being experience this season.
They said contrary to predictions by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency that rainfall this season is not going to be evenly distributed the rain has actually been well distributed.
Ado Umar, one of the farmers at the Karufi Farm disclosed that some farmers in the state have already started harvesting their maize crop, pointing out that more of the harvested maize would enter market next month.
“As you can see Karufi is the depot of fresh maize in Northern Nigeria, and trading activity in fresh maize crop has started picking up, and we are expecting bumper harvest this year.
“Although we are experiencing problem in accessing inputs, despite this we are very optimistic that with the steady rain as well as the even distribution of it fall maize harvest is going to be good” Umar stated.
