Tuns Farms leads in food safety, quality system audit

Tuns Farms Nigeria Limited, leading producer of broiler meat in Nigeria, has set a new benchmark for quality management system for chicken plants in Africa.

The company emerged as one of the top performers in a recent third party audit in safety and quality system conducted by the South African firm, Aspirata.

In a statement made available to BusinessDay, Asiwaju Olatunde Badmus, chairman of TUNS Group made the revelation while receiving a delegation from the office of the vice president, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Health & Education at the company’s headquarters in Osogbo, the Osun state capital.

Also speaking during the visit, Seyi Ogunjinmi, general manager of the company, reiterated the company’s commitment to producing safe and quality chicken products has positioned the company among top fliers in the area of food safety and quality system not only in Nigeria but also across the continent.

“TUNS farm is known for safety and quality, this has been our focus and goal. The recent third party audit carried out by Aspirata firm has only proven our commitment and dedication towards that goal and we promise to continue to deliver only quality and safe products always” he said.

Badmus, while sharing the company’s experience on chicken inclusion in the state’s school meal program, which the company has been handling since the introduction of the school feeding program in Osun four years ago as well as the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the National Egg Production Scheme (NEGPRO) thanked the government for the opportunity given to the company to serve the nation.

He assured the delegates that about 1 million jobs to be created through the egg production scheme will increase to 2 million if the scheme is extended to meat production.

“We can achieve so much more in terms of job creation through meat production. As we speak, six state governors among who are Kebbi and Borno, have signaled their government’s preparedness to look into this and have invited TUNS farms to their states to discuss modalities for takeoff,” he added.

Dotun Adebayo, special assistant to the Vice President, commended the management for setting up international standards that has made international brands such as KFC, Master meat/Shoprite and PCD identify with the farm as a source of safe poultry meat in the country.
