ACCA says employability greater issue than unemployment in Nigeria
Toyin Ademola, country head, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Nigeria, has said that employability of most of today’s Nigerian graduates seems to be a greater job recruitment issue than the much-touted unemployment crisis in the country.
Ademola said this on Friday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when over 2,000 job seekers met with employers and career developers at a fair in the Garden City.
According to her, ACCA had strong reason to host the job seekers in Port Harcourt aiming to use the summit to create an enabling opportunity for some employers of labour to meet with job applicants one-on-one.
The one-day summit saw some of the recruiting firms like Airtel Nigeria, Etisalat,
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Diamond Bank, GTBank, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), PSL Human Capital, Shell and some tuition providers Fasholain attendance.
Ademola in an interview said that organising the summit was in line with ACCA’s corporate social responsibility (CSR).
According to her, this platform created by ACCA whereby employers and jobseekers would come together started about three years ago, noting that it has enabled job seekers to understand how to package their curriculum vitae (CV) for possible employment.
“The reason we are doing this is because one of the greatest problems that employers have with Nigerian students is that of employability and as a result unemployment goes up every year. So basically what we want to do is to give these students a chance to meet employers”, the ACCA country head said.
“Ordinarily, when they leave school, employment will not be easy for them and we are providing this platform free of charge. And we have a lot of agencies who are here to tell the students and job seekers how to package their curriculum vitae (CV) so that they can get better hiring opportunities”, she said.
