APC considers Lagos SSG to pair with Ambode
The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos is said to be seriously considering Oluranti Adebule, the secretary to the state government (SSG), as running mate to Akin Ambode, the party’s governorship candidate for the 2015 election.
Adebule, a devout Muslim, is said to be favoured by the party to balance gender, political and religious equation. Ambode, the party flag bearer is a Christian from Lagos East senatorial district. Party stalwarts were said to have reasoned that a female/Muslim deputy from the Lagos West senatorial district will mean equity for all, because the outgoing Governor Babatunde Fashola, who has done eight years, is from Lagos Central senatorial district.
In Nigerian politics, you do not rule out religious sentiment. The country has been polarized along religious delineation. Ambode is a Christian so a female Muslim is needed to be his deputy.
“In Lagos, we normally use female as deputy governors for gender equality and when you look at the current scenario Adebule with her high religious background and close affinity with the Muslim community in the state was unanimously endorsed,” said a party member who is also representing the state at the House of Representatives.
Adebule, member of the Muslim Students Society (MSS), and a doctorate degree holder, lectured at the Lagos State University (LASU) before her appointment as the SSG. She is seen as a committed party member and a believer in the party’s ideals and programmes.
She was born in Lagos to the family of Idowu-Esho of Ojo Alaworo in Ojo Local Government Area of the state. She began her early education at Awori College, Ojo. Thereafter, she proceeded on admission to the Lagos State University, Ojo, bagging a Bachelor of Art in Education (B.A.Ed) degree in Islamic Studies in 1992.
The Lagos SSG was back at the same institution for a Master’s degree (M.Ed) in Curriculum Studies graduating in 1997. She then bagged a certificate in Early Childhood Development Curriculum and School Administration and Assessment from the Nigeria Institute of International Education Association in 2006.
She later enrolled and completed her doctorate degree (PhD) in Curriculum Studies in 2012 also at the Lagos State University.
