Fresh twin explosions kill 5, injure 13 in Kano
No fewer than five persons lost their lives following twin explosions which occurred in Kano on Sunday.
The first blast went off at Kofar Nasarawa, near the North-West University, while the second explosion happened at St. Charles Church on Zungeru Road in Sabon Gari.
Aderenle Shinaba, the state police commissioner, who confirmed the incident while briefing newsmen in Kano, said 13 other persons sustained injuries.
He said the attack at Kofar Nasarawa was car¬
ried out about 12.05p.m. by a 16-year-old girl suicide bomber who wanted to cross over to the university.
“The girl loaded herself with explosives and her tar¬get was the university and in the course of preventing her from going to the university, she detonated the bomb and injured five policemen.
“Five out of the security personnel stationed at the place sustained injuries, while the girl blew herself off instantly,” the police com-missioner said.
He added that in the case of the second blast on Zungeru Road, the bomb was detonated within the vicinity of the church.
Shinaba said this had led to the killing of five persons while eight others were injured.
“The attack, which was carried out about 1.00p.m., claimed five persons and in¬jured eight persons,” he said.
The police commissioner said three suspects, includ¬ing a cripple, had also been arrested at Sabon Gari while all the injured were now receiving medical attention in the hospital.
He said investigation had already commenced to un¬ravel the circumstances and those behind the attacks.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the af¬fected areas.
There was no immedi¬ate claim of responsibility for either blast, but Islamist militant group Boko Haram has been staging attacks, espe¬cially with explosives, outside its North Eastern heartland for the past three months.
In Cameroon, the wife of the country’s vice prime minister was kidnapped and at least three people were killed in an attack by Boko Haram militants in the northern town of Kolofata on Sunday, Cameroon of¬ficials said.
