Gove announces he will take on Johnson for party leadership
Michael Gove announced this morning that he is to stand for the Conservative Party leadership, claiming that he does not believe Boris Johnson can “provide the leadership or build the team for the task ahead”.
The justice secretary had been expected to support Johnson’s campaign to become party leader after both backed Britain‘s leaving the European Union.
He has now disclosed his intention to run against the former mayor of London.
In a statement, Gove said that the referendum result last week led to his U-turn.
