Lagos government woos rural dwellers with free gas cylinders, accessories

The Lagos State government on Monday distributed free gas cylinders and accessories to some communities in its campaign to make rural dwellers embrace use of cooking gas.

The state’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources stated this in a statement issued in Lagos.

It said that the programme commenced at Alimosho Local Government Area, the community with highest population, with the distribution of free gas cylinders and accessories known as “EKO Gas” to the people, it said.

According to Iyabo Obasa, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the programme is in collaboration with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

She said the state government and LCCI had also concluded plans to extend the distribution of the gas cylinders to other local government areas every week.

Obasa said that the ministry decided to take the cooking gas campaign to the rural areas in a bid to encourage the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the state.

She said the state government was determined to ensure that Lagos homes imbibed the use of LPG because of its inherent advantages.

The permanent secretary also said that the state government introduced Eko Gas Scheme as a domestic fuel of choice for residents.
According to her, the use of gas will help to reduce carbon emissions from the use of firewood and kerosene because of its inherent advantages.

She said that the state government would introduce one million gas cylinders to Lagos homes in the next five years to make the use of LPG a success.

“This exercise of sensitising and distributing of free Eko Gas stove cylinders to residents has been undertaken in Isolo, Eredo, and Badagry local council development areas,” she said.

Adewuyi Makinde, representative of the LCCI, also enjoined residents of Alimosho to embrace the use of a cleaner fuel for cooking.
Makinde described LPG as the cleanest and most efficient fuel globally.

He reiterated LCCI’s commitment to working with the state government to safeguard the environment against the emission of hazardous substances into the atmosphere.
