NCAA threatens to suspend airlines over non-payment of salaries

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has threatened to suspend the operational certificates of airlines in the country that are defaulting in the payment of staff salaries.

The threat was issued by the aviation regulatory body after its management held a meeting with all the affected airlines. NCAA stated that it will no longer condone a situation where the affected staff will disrupt travel plans of passengers over unpaid salaries.

It further expressed serious concern over non-payment of salaries by the airlines, adding that the development was detrimental to the continuous growth of the industry.

In a statement signed by Fan Ndubuoke, general manager, public affairs, NCAA, the regulatory body warned that if the current trend persists, it will resort to sanctions, one of which may result in suspension of Air Operators Certificate (AOC).

“As far as the NCAA is concerned, the issue of non-payment of staff salaries is critical to safety. The moment an airline cannot meet its financial obligations, it is believed that the staff morale will be down and this can impact negatively on safety and security of its operations,” the statement further read in part.
