Ondo generates N10bn as revenue in 11 months

The Ondo State Government generated N10.4 billion as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from January to November,  Peter Paul, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Internally Generated Revenue, disclosed on Monday.

Paul said that the amount was generated from taxes.

He said that officials of the board were mandated to ensure that taxes were remitted appropriately and regularly by tax payers.

The special assistant said that the board had strategised to block all revenue loopholes to ensure that every taxable adult in the state paid tax.

Paul said that one of the strategies was to discourage cash payments and introduction of electronic payment with the use of Point of Sale terminals while official receipt would be issued.

According to him, the government will also employ legal means to ensure that tax defaulters comply and pay their tax.

He said that erring citizens would be prosecuted after the government might have exhausted all reasonable steps to make them pay.

Paul said that in view of the dwindling revenue from the Federal Government due to the fall in oil price, the state would consider other constitutional means to improve its IGR.

He said that it was only when residents paid their taxes promptly that government could meet its obligation by provision of social infrastructure and other basic needs.
