Two feared killed, 27 buses torched as hoodlums clash in Lagos
Two persons were feared killed on Wednesday, and 27 vehicles burnt in a fracas involving two rival groups at Oshodi, Lagos.
The warring factions were suspected to be members of two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) allegedly loyal to two major political parties in the state.
But Kenneth Nwosu, Lagos State police public relation officer, said one person was shot and nine persons have been arrested. “We have recovered 7 cutlasses and 7 extended carriages. We will ensure that there is permanent peace in the area.”
Witnesses said the attacks were ignited by the fighting that started at Olosha area between members of the NURTW and some youths last Thursday who are either members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) or Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
BusinessDay learnt that the crisis was quelled by policemen attached to the Mosafejo Police Station, Oshodi, after two buses were set ablaze by the hoodlums.
The incident paralysed commercial activities in the area especially at Mosafejo Market, as commercial buses avoided the route while commuters were asked to raise their hands before trekking through the axis.
A resident of Masajefo community who identified himself as Richard Adeshina, said, “We couldn’t sleep because we heard several gun shots at night.
In fact, it took the intervention of the community vigilante and the community youths to repel the rampaging thugs from setting houses in the community ablaze.”
Peter Ishola, chairman of Mosafejo Community Development Area, said the fight started at about 7:00 pm on Tuesday evening.
According to Olatunji Adekola, a resident of Oshodi, the fracas had been brewing between both factions few minutes after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) concluded their campaign rallies in Oshodi.
