The bad example of Lagos State

In governance and fiscal prudence, Lagos is usually cited as a pace setter, a good example for other states and governors to emulate. However, last week Lagos shot itself in the foot when it trucked 72 persons of south-eastern origin to Onitsha, Anambra State, and dumped them in the street in the middle of the night. According to report, this isn’t the first time. Other sections are also reported to have been dealt similar slaps in the face.

The Lagos Commissioner of Police called these persons “destitutes” and said this was not “deportation” but “rehabilitation and resettlement.” Never mind the name. If this is the way to “resettle” destitutes, why does Lagos have so many beggars? If these persons have committed crimes, why hasn’t the law dealt with them? Is it lawful/constitutional to ban (deport, banish, exile) a Nigerian citizen from any part of the federation?

Governor Fashola, who is a lawyer, ought to know the answers to these questions.
