Why I wrote Financial Control in the Nigerian Public Service, by Sodade
Bayo Sodade, permanent secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, has said that he was motivated to write his latest books, Financial Control in the Nigerian Public Service and Biblenomics, in order to bridge the knowledge gap in public budgeting and financial management.
Bayo stated this at the launch of the books, weekend, in Lagos, saying while serving as a junior officer in the public service, and preparing for various examinations, he had cause to read books which contents he discovered were lacking in quality.
According to the erudite permanent secretary, as he climbed the ladder in his career life, he felt the compelling need to broaden knowledge by writing books that draw from long practical experience in public finance management and budgeting.
“In those years, I discovered that some of the books I came across were substandard, so I started thinking of doing something of quality that would add value to the readers”, said Sodade, at the launch attended by Ben Akabueze, the state commissioner for economic planning and budget, and the Adedotun Gbadebo, the Alake of Egba-land.
Akabueze, speaking on the books, said they would be of immense value to policing readers especially coming from an author, who has the practical experience of public finance and budget management.
Dayo Alabi, managing director of the Book Company Limited, the publishers of the books, also speaking, said they accepted to publish the book to fulfill the author’s desire to bridge the knowledge gap particularly of those who manage public resources in Nigeria.
“In our interaction with the author upon approaching us, we discovered that he wants those who manage our resources and commonwealth to apply economic and management principles which are consistent with the teachings of the Bible. In fact, he wants those who also work in the private sector and all of us in our individual lives to apply these principles in managing the resources that belong to others and to ourselves as this will lead to a more effective utilisation of scarce resources for greater benefits to all concerned.
“I can confidently say that another motivation that propelled Sodade to write these books is the fact that he is privileged to be working for Lagos State where these principles he believes in and preaches are not only appreciated but are encouraged and practised. This is evident in the fact that Lagos State is better managed than most states in the country,” said Alabi.
