Nasarawa-ASUU wants members enrolled in NHIS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has urged the State Government to enroll its members in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The vice chairman of the union, Dr Mairiga Peters, made this appeal on Friday while speaking with newsmen in Keffi, Keffi Local Government Area of the state.

Peters said that introducing the NHIS programmes in the state would go a long way in improving on the lives of the union members, the university community and workers in the state.

According to him, the university has one of the best health care centres in the country, which qualifies it as a primary health care provider.

The don said that members of the academic community and the university were yet to subscribe to the NHIS scheme.

According to him, the importance of NHIS to the development of the health sector and humanity cannot be over-emphasised, hence the need for the government to introduce the scheme in the state.

“We appeal to the government to include in its health care policy, the university community by introducing NHIS to it in the interest of the health of our members.

“Because a healthy nation is a wealthy nation, hence the need for my appeal,” he said.

In the same vein, the union leader called on the government to fund the university adequately in order to improve on its standard of education.

The vice chairman restated the commitment of the association to the government’s good polices and programmes, which had direct bearing on the lives of its members and the students.
