NCRIB tasks government on role of insurance in disaster management
The Federal Government has been called upon to recognise the pivotal place of insurance in disaster management as a necessary tool for providing compensation and succour to affected victims.
Ayodapo Shoderu, president, Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (BCRIB) made this call during a courtesy visit by members NCRIB to the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Abuja.
Shoderu disclosed that government’s efforts in disaster management would be more result-oriented if insurance which is one of the most potent risk management device is factored into disaster management plans at all levels of government in the country. He said that historically insurance has been regarded as the saviour of mankind, but regretfully it’s roles have not be adequately recognised in the scheme of things, especially in disaster management.
“The practice of setting aside budgetary allocations to disaster management is commendable; it makes better sense for government to subscribe to insurance for the purpose of disaster compensations, from which victims of unfortunate disasters could be succoured in the country,” said Shoderu.
Shoderu commended the Federal Government for appointing Abass Idriss, the current director general of FEMA, to head the Agency, considering his robust pedigree in insurance and risk/disaster management.
Responding, Abass highlighted the achievements of the Agency in disaster management and control within the Federal Capital Territory since it was established. Abass assured that the Agency has recognised the importance of insurance to disaster management and was prepared to ensure the engagement and synergy of relevant stakeholders for better efficiency.
