Intel Corporation trains 80 Nigerian undergraduates in ICT

As part of the efforts to boost the growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Nigerian economy, Intel Corporation, an international ICT organisation, has offered training for over 80 undergraduates with the use of Intel Galileo Board.

The 80 participants were drawn from eight universities in the country which included: Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Kaduna State; Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State; Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State and Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Others are: Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ondo State; Federal University of Science and Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State and the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State.

The intensive training workshop which lasted for two weeks took place at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) and had experts from Intel Corporation and other ICT engineers drawn from private sector and universities in the country.

Speaking at the workshop, Wolf Witt, a member of Intel Education Service Corps, stated that Intel Corporation was committed to contributing to the development of engineering and technology in higher institutions of learning and Nigeria at large.

According to him “Engineering is the process of applying that science to create technology that solves real problems and thereby makes our lives better. Two weeks is not a lot of time to learn and integrate many new software and hardware concepts, and I wish we could have shared more, but please recall the projects we saw this morning.”

In his remarks, Babatunde Akinola, the corporate affairs manager, Intel Nigeria, who applauded the participants for the enthusiasm demonstrated during the training, also charged the beneficiaries to be innovative by exploring the many opportunities and potentials that can be derived with the use of the Intel Galileo Board.

“Galileo is a platform for you to express yourself. It can spur you to being creative and innovative. There is a wealth of resources on our platform that you can use,” he declared.

Also speaking at the event was Adebiyi Daramola, the vice chancellor, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), who was represented by Emmanuel Adedayo Fasakin, deputy vice chancellor (Academics), applauded Intel Corporation for the laudable gesture, adding that the training on the use of the Intel Galileo Board acquired over the last two weeks will go a long way in contributing positively to the growth of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“The past two weeks has been a series of intensive training on the use and maintenance of the uniquely developed boards. I therefore consider all participants very lucky, as this training has further placed them on a better platform of professionalism and steadfastness than their professional colleagues across Africa.

In the same vein, Kayode Alese, the coordinator, Intel Galileo Training Workshop, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), explained that the workshop would go a long way in broadening the horizon of all participants to the unending possibilities that can be achieved with the Intel Galileo Board.

At the end of the workshop, the beneficiaries displayed the projects they carried out as a result of the knowledge acquired from the training while certificates also presented them.
