You are the Force
The Pope’s recent visit to the US was on the news across the world a few weeks ago. Each year, thousands travel to the Vatican in the region of Rome to visit historical sites frozen in time. One of such sites is the Sistine chapel.
What makes this particular site of great interest to millions around the world is not necessarily because of the religious significance the chapel building holds but mainly for the remarkable painting you would find on the ceiling of this building. Tourists come by the busloads to view the masterpiece painted on the ceiling of this revered chapel by Michelangelo which has become one of the great wonders of the world and serves as a standard for developing artists.
Today, Rome makes billions based on one man’s decision to translate his gifts to action. History has been shaped by the acts of ordinary people like you and I. What you do today is a seed sown that brings about a harvest. A
Think about it, what would have happened if Isaac Newton never discovered gravity, and all the great and impactful leaders of today were badly mentored by their supervisor? We would have been robbed of their potential. All the good they have brought to the advancement of humanity, the workplace and the board room would have been lost.
Your employees and team members all have potentials. Your actions as a line leader is either helping them understand profitably deploy and meaningfully maximise their potential or is placing a lid on it. Someone decides to mentor a young employee today not knowing that they are actually mentoring the CEO of the company in a few years!
Regardless of how skilled we all are, we learnt most of what they know now from one or more supervisors we worked with. Every one of those supervisors’ knowingly or unknowingly imparted knowledge, transferred work ethics, and translated wisdom to them.
As a supervisor, line leader or C-Suite executive, choose to do the things that will not only help your organisation win but that will also contribute to bringing out the best in your people. Give necessary feedback, impart knowledge, train, mentor, expose to work challenges, delegate effectively, trust hard and communicate honestly. At the end of the day, you would not have only succeeded in keeping your people engaged but would have channelled their inner Michelangelo! Who benefits at the end of the day?
Your people actions make a big difference be you an employee, an organisation, a country and humanity. You are the force!
