Delta seeks for support from FG, NEMA to tackle flooding
The Delta State government on Wednesday called on the Federal Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the state in addressing the challenges posed by flood.
Kingsley Utuaro, the deputy governor, made the call during an inspection visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Asaba.
Utuaro, who is also the chairman of the State Flood Committee, called on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to support the state government in addressing the impact of flooding on residents of the state.
He said the support would lessen the suffering experienced by those displaced from their various home by flood, saying, “in Asaba camp alone, we have more than 250 persons in the camp and most of them are children and women who are more vulnerable to flooding.
“And as we speak, we have lost two persons to the flood already.”
The deputy governor said the state government could not handle the challenge of the flooding alone, adding that the state government had been doing its best in ensuring that the people were adequately protected.
“The state had also put a lot of modality in place in order to ensure the safety of the people,’’ he said.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the committee also visited Phase II area of Infant Jesus Road, which was also submerged by the flood. The victims are relocated to temporary sites in various local government areas of the state.
The flood had affected Oshimili South, Ndokwa East, Burutu, Bomadi, Patani and Ughelli South Local Government areas of Delta.
