Lagos releases N17.5bn for 115 inner city roads
Lagos State government has approved the release of N17.5 billion for construction works to commence on 115 inner city roads in the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas of the state.
The project will see to the construction of two roads from each of the 57 councils. The authorities of the councils select the roads and the contractors to handle the project and it is expected that the project will create jobs for the locals in each domain.
Kolade Alabi, chairman, Conference 57, comprising all the executive secretaries of the 57 councils, at a news conference in Ikeja on Tuesday, said the contractors had been mobilised with 30 percent of the cost of the projects and should commence work within the next one week.
Steve Ayorinde, commissioner for information and strategy, giving a background to the ‘project 115’, said the mission for the actualisation of the project started in October 2015, when Governor Akinwunmi Ambode met with the executive secretaries of all the 57 councils and agreed with them on the need to massively embark on rehabilitation and construction of inner roads across the state.
Ayorinde said the project was designed to complement the massive road construction and rehabilitation going on in the state, which culminated in the repair of 300 roads in just seven months, adding that the project demonstrated the resolve of the government to make Lagos work for all.
Corroborating, Alabi said the project was coming to fulfil Governor Ambode’s promise to improve the access and inner roads in the grassroots, hence, the directive by the governor to management of 57 councils to construct two inner roads each.
Some of the roads to be fixed include: Matthew, Ogundele streets, in Agege LGA, Alhaji Idowu Street in Alimosho, Michael Ogun/Durojaiye Street, Surulere LGA, among others.
