Lagos to host ‘hour of code Nigeria 2015’
Lagos State Ministry of Science and Technology has confirmed its plans to collaborate with Wifi Cobat Academy to organise an hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify ‘code’ targeted at elementary and secondary school students.
To this effect, Wifi Cobat Academy will be holding an ‘Hour of Code’ campaign workshop for a number of Lagos State schools where children from the ages of 8 to 11 years and 11 to 16 years will be taught the rudiments of coding.
Coding, also known as programming, is how sites like Facebook and apps like Instagram are made. Knowing how to programme is the spine of computing. It is a skill that not only teaches people how to work with computers, but also how to think about solving problems with systems.
In a news release, the academy stated that it “will be teaching Kudos and scratch by IT professionals in the industry. Classes will start from 9am to 3pm for the whole day of coding.
“We want students from Lagos State government schools to participate in the “Hour of Code” campaign workshop; 50 students in primary school and 50 students in secondary schools.”
According to the Academy, animation game design using Alice will be taught to primary and secondary school students between the ages of 11 to 16 years.
Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create animation for storytelling, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web.
The Academy has stated some of its aims and objectives for offering this programme as, helping beginners create confidence in learning how to code, to help build critical mass for children at an early age from five above to start learning how to code, among others.
