Menace of Fulani herdsmen: Zone 9 police to hold enlightenment workshop

In a move to curtail the constant clashes between communities and Fulani herdsmen, Yerima Fyarah, assistant inspector general of police in charge of Zone 9, has said his zone will soon hold a workshop to educate both parties on how to handle the issue.

Fyarah, who disclosed in Umuahia during his maiden chat with newsmen, said his men were on ground to maintain peaceful co-existence between the herdsmen and various communities within the zone.

He said since he assumed office as the new helmsman of the zone few weeks ago, he had with the commissioners of police from Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Imo, which make up the zone, have had series of meetings with the communities and herdsmen.

The AIG, who said that his zone would work in synergy with the public, solicited for the assistance of all by volunteering information to the police that would enable them carry out their duties effectively, and promised to protect informants.

“The public depends on the press for information. I appeal to you journalists to give police information that will help the police carry out their jobs,” said the AIG.

The zone police boss, who assured the public that his men would observe human rights, warned his men to desist from illegal detention and exploitation of members of the public.

He said that commissioners of police in the zone had been kept on red alert to combat crime and that his men were working in synergy with other security agencies in fight against crime in the zone.
