NDDC begins implementation of strategic intervention projects in A/Ibom
Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the implementation of strategic intervention projects in Akwa Ibom State to ameliorate the hardship being experienced as a result of the current economic recession.
The projects involve the rehabilitation of a number of roads and streets in Uyo, the state capital, and other major towns in the state.
In a statement signed by Uwem Udoma, special assistant to the acting managing director of the commission, Ibim Semenitari, the commission said a total of 34 road projects were being executed under the scheme with many of them nearing completion.
According to the statement, the roads include Ukana Offot Street, Nkemba Street, Port Harcourt Street and Williams Street, all in Uyo, the state capital, among other roads with the names of the contractors handling the projects also released.
There are also road projects being also executed in Abak and Ibeno local government areas under the scheme.
A check shows that some of the roads and streets have been completed particularly those that involved resurfacing and tarring while those requiring the construction of drainages are still ongoing.
While many commuters and motorists have expressed delight over the construction of the affected streets in Uyo, the state capital most especially Ukana Offot and Udo Eduok streets, others have expressed reservations over the quality of work carried out by the contractors.
“We are happy that the roads and streets are being rehabilitated, but we are not so happy with the quality of work done, the commission in the past has not been known to pay attention to details and quality,’’ one resident said.
They also expressed gratitude to the outgoing managing director of the commission for approving for the rehabilitation of some of the dilapidated roads in the state capital as well as the construction of the Calabar Itu highway which according to them had been in a deplorable condition.
The commission did not however disclose the total value of the contract in terms of cost.
