NDLEA intercepts 24,000kg illicit drugs in Kano
The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 24,000 kilograms of illicit drugs in the state in the last three months.
Hamza Umar, the commandant of the agency in Kano, said the command had in July intercepted over 1,229 kilograms of the substances and arrested 59 suspects.
He said the agency had also intercepted 18,764 kilograms Indian Hemp and cough syrups and arrested 79 suspects in August, adding that the suspects were arraigned in the Federal High Court, Kano. He also said that the command had counseled 140 drug users, rehabilitated 14 and another 14 were undergoing counseling.
Umar said the agency was making efforts to collaborate with the Almajiri schools in its fight against drug abuse, adding that the effort was part of the agency’s responsibilities to educate the society on dangers of drug abuse.
He said the agency had also commenced enlightenment programmes in primary and post primary institutions to reduce drug addiction among youth.
Umar said the NDLEA had recently arrested street beggars, including under aged children being used by drug dealers to sale Indian hemp and other substances for them.
“We have discovered that some of the children were victims of the North East insurgency, while others were brought to the state for Almajiri school.”
