NLC factions may sign agreement of reconciliation

Indications emerged yesterday that the two factional leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) might sign an agreement today to end their nine months’ crisis.

But the peace agreement may not be achieved without addressing the issues of alleged election rigging in the March NLC delegate conference.

A joint meeting of the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the factions involving mainly presidents and general secretaries of their affiliates taking place today at the Labour House, Abuja, is a fall-out of the November 12 meeting hosted by Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State alongside other veterans, including pioneer president of NLC, Hassan Sunmonu.

BusinessDay gathers that much pressure is coming from the veterans led by Governor Oshiomhole to reconcile Ayuba Wabba and Joe Ajaero-led factions in a meeting slated for today.

Although there is a set of possible agreement being considered to be presented at the joint meeting of the factional leaders to rectify today, there are concerns that unity could be achieved because the veterans are interested in the unity of the movement other than the causes of the crisis.

“We are likely going to have unity without justice. That will be very dangerous for the movement if people who committed impunity through rigging and other manipulations to achieve power, are allowed to go scot-free,” said a concerned labour leader.
