NUPENG charges FG on poor state of federal roads
Worried by the poor state of roads nationwide, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has urged the Federal Government to take decisive steps towards fixing the roads in order to reduce spate of accidents and continued loss of lives.
The union described the roads as death traps riddled with potholes and called for urgent attention as the yuletide approaches.
According to NUPENG, “most of the nation’s expressways are in a state of disrepair,” listing Benin – Okene – Lokoja, Port Harcourt – Aba, Ilorin – Jebba- Mokwa, Sagamu-Ore, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, among others, as examples.
Igwe Achese, NUPENG president, speaking on the increasing danger posed to lives and property on federal roads and inherent economic losses, said it was high time the minister of works, Babatunde Fashola began repair works to fill the gullies and potholes as many travellers would use these roads during this festive season.
“These roads must be given quick attention, as more petroleum tankers will be plying through these roads as we approach Christmas season. It also tasks the government on long-term rehabilitation of these roads so that citizens’ lives will not be cut short,” Achese said.
