RIVERS MAN holds 3rd Maths summer workshop in Port Harcourt
The third edition of the summer workshop of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter otherwise called RIVERS MAN held in Port Harcourt August 09 and 10. The workshop was to showcase Mathematics as an important subject in both academic pursuit and everyday practical usage, as well as to promote the study of the subject by students, especially those in the secondary school.
According to Folake Eze, the president of RIVERS MAN, this year’s workshop had as its theme: “Teaching and Learning Mathematics for Practiucal Usage.”
The summer Maths workshop featured topics like Arithmetic: ratio and place values; Algebra: linear equations and quadratic equations; Statistics: correlation and regression; Construction; angles: 15º, 105º and 120º; Calculus: differentiation and integration and WAEC focus: longitude and latitude; angles of elevation and depression. There was also side attraction featuring: the first and second Maths workshop in retrospect, lucky dip, exhibition, raffle draw, quick question and answer corner (QQAC), presentation of the 2016 Olympiad and the RIVERS MAN secretariat.
There was also a Mathematics clinic for students featuring primary, junior and senior secondary students, and Mathematics Club members. For the Primary school students, there was Maths Scrabble and Ratio; the Junior Secondary had angles of elevation and depression and Maths games. The Senior Secondary students had Longitude and Latitude, Maths Teezers and Maths Scrabble.
