We won’t meddle in LASIEC’s affairs – Ambode
Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said the executive arm of government would not meddle in the affairs of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), just as he charged the commission to be fair to all, irrespective of political affiliations.
Ambode spoke at the swearing-in of Ayotunde Philips, a retired chief judge of the state, as chairman of LASIEC. Also sworn in were Bunmi Omosehindemi; Lateef Raji; Toyin Famakinwa; Olusegun Ayedun, all members, and Olumide Lawal as the permanent secretary.
According to Ambode, his administration places high premium on the rule of law, and will therefore not do anything to directly or indirectly interfere in the affairs of the electoral body.
He said LASIEC, as the statutory body saddled with the responsibility of conducting local government elections, had a critical role to play in entrenching the democratic process in the state, and this called for the newly sworn-in members to ensure the credibility of the electoral process.
Phillips, chairman of the commission, assured that they would do their best to ensure credible, free and fair elections, pledging that her tenure would witness the transformation of LASIEC to an institution that would be envied and emulated by other states of the federation.
