$1.2bn Lekki Deep Seaport gets 2021 as new completion date

The multi-billion dollar Lekki Deep Seaport project being developed in the Ibeju-Lekki axis of Lagos State will now be completed by year 2021, Tolaram Group, developer of Lekki Deep Seaport said recently in Lagos.

According to the developer, construction work would start in August next year but there would be full and whole lots of activities at the port site by December 2018.

Haresh Aswani, Group managing director of Tolaram Group said this recently in Lagos when Koh Poh Koon, Singaporean Minister of State for Trade and Industry, visited the expensive Free Trade Zone in Lagos.

“We have multiple projects which include the building of an expensive industrial and business park together with Nigeria’s biggest deep seaport project. We are building the port, which is approximately $1.2 billion project in the first phase,” he said.

He said that the port would be a transshipment seaport where about 70 percent of the cargo would be for the local market while 30 percent will be dedicated for transshipment cargo for the neighbouring countries.

The Lekki Port project is being spearheaded by Tolaram Group along with its partners, the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), the Lagos State Government and other strategic investors.

It is expected to have a projected volume of twenty equivalent units (TEUs) capacity of 2.5 million per annum with capacity to handle container, dry bulk, and liquid berths as well as to have a draught of 16.5 percent to receive bigger ships.

Lekki is a multi-purpose deep seaport and will be one of the most modern ports, supporting the burgeoning trade across Nigeria and the entire West African region.
