ICPC awaits public petition to begin probe of MAN Oron’s rector
The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) said is now aware of the alleged financial mismanagement in the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron but awaits formal petitions from members of the public to enable the anti-corruption agency swing into action.
Adedayo Kayode, ICPC’s head of investigation, said the commission is ready to investigate the matter but only when the aggrieved parties petition the body which will give it the right to beam searchlight on the Academy.
According to him, it will be more concrete if more information is dug out and sent to ICPC based on section (6) a of the Act establishing the commission. “When we receive petition, we swing into action and base on intelligence gathered over the alleged financial recklessness at the academy, it will be easier for speedy action when there are specifics on a particular project.”
The anti-graft agency therefore called on Nigerians and any agency of government who can help the commission with detailed document and petitions on finances of the academy to come forward with it.
Recall that Joshua Okpo, rector of MAN Oron, has been in the eye of the storm, following the alleged inability to explain to the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, how he deployed the sum of N13 billion remitted to the institution by Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety agency (NIMASA) since 2011.
Okpo was alleged to have got into trouble when the Minister was told by the acting director-general of NIMASA, Haruna Jauro that the agency has remitted over N18 billion to the Academy since 2009.
