Market share, TEU capacity position Maersk, MSC as top global shipping lines
AP Moller Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company and CMA CGM Group have emerged as leaders in the global shipping business on the global ranking for shipping liners based on their market share as well as the twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) capacity of containers they handle.
According to alphaliner.com, APM-Maersk, which took the first position, handles about 2,760,905 TEUs of containers annually and controls 15 percent of the global market share, while MSC, which handles annual throughput of 2,486,112 TEUs of containers, also controls 13.5 percent of the world market share.
CMA CGM Group emerged the third leading container shipping liner with annual throughput of 1,586,895 TEUs and 8.6 market share, while the fourth position was occupied by Evergreen Line with 904,608 annual container throughput and 4.9 percent global market share.
COSCO Container Line, which handles an annual throughput of 795,598 TEUs and controls 4.3 percent global market share, took the fifth position, while Hapag-Lloyd came sixth with 747,493 TEUs and 4.1 percent market share.
The alphaliner.com report said CSCL, which handles a total volume of 649,170 TEUs annually and controls 3.5 percent of global market share, is the seventh shipping liner, while Hanjin Shipping that handles 596,335 TEUs of container and controls 3.2 percent market share, emerged the eighth leading shipping company in the world.
Others are MOL, which handles a total of 584,669 TEUs and controls 3.2 percent of the market, at ninth position; APL with 582,172 TEUs and 3.2 percent market share, at 10th position; OOCL, which handles an annual throughput of 506,179 TEUs and 2.8 percent market share, at11th position; Hamburg Süd Group took the 12th position with 499,867 TEU capacity and 2.7 percent market share; NYK Line that handles 499,184 TEUs annual volume and controls 2.7 percent market share came 13th, while Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation that controls 419,625 throughput and 2.3 market share came 14th.
The report further rated Hyundai M.M. that handles 384,924 throughput and 2.1 market share as the 15th leading shipping liner, while Pacific Int. Line that controls 367,194TEUs of container annually and 2.0 percent market share came 16th.
Others include K Line with 359,865 volumes and 2.0 percent market share; Zim with 342,235 TEUs and 1.9 percent market share; UASC with 298,909 throughput and 1.6 percent market share, and CSAV Group with 242,148 TEUs container volume and 1.3 percent global market share.
