NPA to take delivery of 3 new ships to enhance port security

 The Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) is concluding arrangements to acquire three new ships, which are to be utilised for the purpose of enhancing security at the port and its environment.

Iheanacho Ebubeogu, general manager, Public Affairs, who disclosed this to newsmen at a media parley held in Lagos, also said that one of the ships would be built by a French ship building company while the other ships were being built by a South African ship building company.

“We are finding permanent solution to the security challenges in the port by building a system that will ensure that there is strict security right from the sea down to the port,” Ebubeogu said.

On the recent drop on cargo throughput, he said Nigeria is a destination port that depends on importation of consumable goods rather than port of origin, which is why Nigerian port is affected by the current financial recession facing Western countries.

This is why, he said, no Nigerian port experienced congestion last December, even though December is a festive period that comes with many activities and a time when individuals purchase consumable goods more than any other time.
