Ogun petro-gas institute partners Warri-based maritime firm on human capacity development
Determined to ensure compliance with best practices and international standards in the shipping and maritime industry, the Ogun State government-owned Gateway Industrial and Petro-Gas Institute, Oni, Ogun State, recently partnered Enikkom Investment Services Nigeria Limited to develop human capacity in maritime and shipping.
The shipping and maritime-based human capacity development workshop, according to management of the Institute, was organised “to develop maritime skills of Institute staff whose duties involve working in and around marine environment; at the Gateway Industrial and Petro-Gas Institute (GIPI) jetties in Iwopin and Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and in ports authority across the country”.
Speaking on the 3-day course tagged ‘Survival Swimming and Life-Saving Techniques’, Adeyemi Olabode, the rector of GIPI, said the Institute initiated the maritime training for its staff to reduce the effect of injuries and relieve anxiety, pain and discomfort which workers in maritime and shipping line are exposed to.
Olabode said that the 3-day workshop is organised to equip participants with knowledge of medical emergencies and first aid treatment for maritime workers in case of any accident and to keep seriously injured persons alive. He further tasked the participants to key into the vocational training for efficient and excellent performance at their various bases.
Speaking earlier, Johnson Kehinde from Enikkom Investment Services Nigeria Limited noted that training workers in shipping and maritime industry is important for prevention of hazards and accidents.
Kehinde, while delivering a lecture tagged ‘Introduction to Rescue and Life Saving’, said rescue methods such as reaching, throwing, wading and human chain can be adopted to save a person from drowning or to revive those who have already stopped breathing.
For his part, Oke Ogungbamila, a lecturer in the Department of Health Safety and Environment of the Institute, canvassed the use of life jackets among the maritime workers in case of emergency.
