Passenger ferry services commence at Ijegun-Egba jetty
Relief has at last come for residents of Satellite Town area of Lagos State and its environs who have business to transact in the Apapa and Victoria Island neighbourhood as they no longer have to suffer untold stress daily to get to their business premises due to the incessant traffic on the road. They now have the option of boarding a passenger ferry from Ijegun Egba jetty and travel with less stress.
This is as daily passenger ferry services have commenced on the Ijegun Egba-Apapa-Elegbata-CMS-Victoria Island route with the pioneering effort of Storirin Maritime Services Limited.
Rasak Olojede, a staff of Oriade Local Council Development Area and an indigene of the area where the jetty is located, who spoke with BusinessDay, said the redevelopment of the jetty was part of the larger plan of the Lagos State government to open up alternative means of transport for Lagos residents in order to decongest traffic as well as reduce pressure on the roads.
“The opening up of the jetty for passenger ferry services is part of the state government’s plan to develop intermodal transport system in the state. It will be of immense benefit to residents of Satellite Town, Festac Town and environs. They no longer need to face the stress of commuting by road to the island and spending hours in unending traffic. All they have to do now is drive to the jetty, park their cars at the parking lot, board a ferry to Apapa or to Victoria Island, transact their business and catch a ferry back,” he said.
To make the jetty more attractive for both commuters and private investors, however, Olojede said the state government should consider the expansion of the Mumin Adio Badmus road which links the jetty from Fin Niger bus-stop as well as construct a more befitting and accommodating park at the jetty.
Ijegun Egba jetty is located in the Ijegun-Satellite area of Lagos, off Lagos-Badagry Expressway. It is accessible through either Abule-Ado or Fin Niger bus-stop. On the average, it takes about one hour to get from Ijegun Egba to VI.
