Peterside promises to make Nigeria hub for maritime activities in Africa
Dakuku Peterside, the newly appointed director general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has promised that the agency under his watch is committed to transforming Nigeria into becoming the hub of maritime activities in Africa.
In statement signed by Lami Tumaka, head, Public Relations of NIMASA, the DG made the promise when he officially took over the headship of NIMASA from Haruna Baba Jauro, former acting director general, at the agency’s headquarters in Lagos.
While observing that NIMASA has competent personnel to drive its mandates, Peterside called on the outgoing DG to always avail the agency of his experience and expertise when need arise.
“We will harness the vast potentials in the agency to make Nigeria a maritime hub in the West and Central Africa sub-region by implementing all international laws and conventions, increased enforcement of our mandates and build the necessary capacity for indigenous operators to leverage on Cabotage Act,” the DG promised.
In his comments, Haruna Baba Jauro expressed gratitude to God and federal government for giving him the opportunity to serve the nation in the last three and half years and promised to work with the present management when required.
Jauro enjoined the new DG to resort to the Act governing NIMASA as his guiding compass, even as he also noted that the Cabotage Act should be reviewed with a view to impacting positively on the indigenous operators.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari recently appointed Dakuku Peterside as the director general/CEO of NIMASA, thereby replacing Haruna Baba Jauro as the substantive DG.
