Ports & Cargo deploys RTG at scanning site to increase volume of scanned containers
Ports & Cargo Handling Services Limited (P&CHSL), a member of Sifax Group and the concessionaire in charge of Terminal ‘C’ of Tin-Can Island Port in Lagos, has deployed one out the 10 new Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTGs) Cranes to the scanning site of Cotecna in its terminal.
With the deployment of the equipment, 400 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of containers can now be positioned for scanning on daily basis. This will be an additional 150 containers to the 250 TEUs that are currently being handled daily at the examination bay.
Also, the terminal extended its operational hours to 10:00pm daily to enable it achieve massive turnaround and fast-track cargo clearing procedure at the terminal.
With the stationing of this RTG at the scanning area, it means that P&CHS can receive up to 400 TEUs in a day and position same volume for scanning the next morning, said Oliver Omajuwa, head, Corporate Affairs Department of Sifax Group, in a statement.
According to him, P&CHS now provides trucks to take containers to the scanning site at no extra cost to the customers. This, he said, has helped to reduce both vehicular and human traffic in the scanning area of the terminal to the barest minimum.
He further disclosed that the new approach has resulted to high productivity because it has succeeded in removing congestion at the terminal. “It has also saved the customer huge sums, which they usually spend on transportation as well as on excess demurrage charges. This is because personal trucks no longer have to wait to go through scanning,” he said.
The terminal pledged to improve on this new approach by adopting best industry practice in seaport terminal operations in the world based on its commitment to delight all its existing and prospective customers.
