Strike impact on Ghana oil production
The industrial action by oil workers at Jubilee Oilfield in the Western Region is set to result in significant reduction in oil production in Ghana. The oil and gas workers are protesting low salaries.
They alleged that local workers were paid monthly wages between GH¢2 500 and GH¢3 000 per month while their expatriate workers would receive a whopping GH¢15, 000 to GH¢30, 000 per month.
The locals argue that both expatriates and locals do the same kind of work only to be separated when it comes to wages and salaries.
“We do similar work, have same qualifications and perform similar duties, but why our salaries are so different? What worries most is that we get around GH¢2 500-to- GH¢3 000 per month when expatriates receive five-times what we earn, that’s highly unfair and discrimination,” according to the striking workers.
The striking workers vowed not to go back for work until their grievances were resolved.
The strike comes barely a month Ghana was plunged into darkness when striking Nigerian oil workers switched off gas supplies destined for Ghana causing acute shortages of cooking, lighting and industrial purposes.
