NERC says 10 NIPP stations will be completed in 2014

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday said 10 National Independent Power Projects (NIPP) would be ready and connected to the national grid before the end of April 2014.

Abba Armiya’u, NERC commissioner of government and consumer affairs, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt.

Armiya’u said the country currently generates 4, 000 megawatts of electricity from its initial 4, 500 megawatts of electricity it generated recently.

“There are 10 independent power stations built by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) that will soon be connected to the grid.

“When it is finally connected, it will double the current generation capacity and we are looking at latest, the first quarter of 2014.

“By that time, all the plants will be connected and synchronised to the grid.

“I’m optimistic that in 2014, we will have more than double the capacity of electricity generation that we have today,” he said.

Armiya’u said that huge investment would be required to be able to “wheel” the added generation to the transmission network.

Abba is in the state to commission a customer electricity-complaints office complex.

The office, he said, would be responsible for resolving disputes between it and electricity consumers in five of the six Niger Delta states.
