‘Power sector privatisation responsible for electricity tariff increment’
Lawal Abdul, general manager, Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC), on Wednesday attributed recent increment in electricity tariff and fixed charges to the privatisation of the power sector.
Abdul told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna that details on the increment was captured under the ‘Multi Year Tariff Order two (MYTO phase two)’ approved by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
He said the five-year tariff plan was principally adopted to assist the companies in recovering their operational cost and ensuring full implementation of their capital programmes.
“It is also to ensure that all our operational costs were recovered to enable the company pay for energy received from electricity generators.
“MYTO phase two was a major tariff regime done every five years while the minor tariff regime would be effected yearly.
“There would not be another major tariff increment for 2013 till June 2014 across the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company”, Abdul said.
On prepaid metres, the general manger said that they were still free, adding that an initiative known as ‘Credit Advance Payment Implementation’ had been introduced by the NERC.
