TCN claims attaining 5000MW electricity transmission record
Nigerians are expected to enjoy more power supply following the attainment of a new record peak generation of 5074.7MW claimed by the System Operator, Transmission Company of Nigeria.
Despite this new record peak, business concerns in Lagos and environs are yet to benefit from this improvement in the TCN’s ability to wheel such volume of power. Businesses in places like Lagos and Ibadan have been mostly on generators since last week.
The said achievement by the TCN is in spite of the fact that the strategic Escravos –Lagos gas pipeline which was bombed recently is still under repairs.
Dipak Sama, managing director, System Operation/Market Operation, TCN, attributed the twin peak achievements to the enhanced cooperation among all the power sector stakeholders and concerted efforts by system operators at the National Control Centre and other stations to ensure that all generated power is wheeled to the distribution companies and that there is no stranded power.
He told BusinessDay that it was the determination of the stakeholders to effectively utilise the stranded power available that has seen the TCN achieve this feat of being
able to wheel the power and not because there was any upgrade in the transmission network.
The generation companies, he said, were able to generate this volume which the TCN was available to wheel while the distribution companies also demonstrated the desire to pick it.
He said the stakeholders just decided that they wanted to optimise what was available with the support of the National Control Centre.
