INBF delegation from Nigeria calls on the Bombay Bar Association

delegation of Nigerian lawyers from the just concluded India Nigeria Business Forum (INBF) made a call on the Bombay Bar Association. The group led by the Executive Director of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Eire Ifueko Alufohai and the Managing Partner of the organising firm, Osaro Eghobamien, SAN met with the Executive of the association at the premises of the Bombay High Court.

Leading the Bombay delegation was the President of the association, Dr. Milind R. Sathe alongside other members of the association.

With a warm welcome the Nigerian delegation was primed with history of Bombay bar, the Indian legal system and the Bombay High Court. Sathe, disclosed that the Courts in India were very proactive, practicing what is known as judicial activism.

Addressing the group of Indian legal practitioners, the Vice Chair of the NBA Section on Business Law, Olumide Akpata, shed some light on the India Nigeria Business Forum and prospective partnerships between both associations, while thanking the ExCo for receiving the Nigerian delegation.

To round off the visit, the group of Nigerian lawyers were conducted around the high court facility, which houses several court rooms and a museum that holds the rich judicial History of Bombay, Artefacts, Charters, Attorney’s Roll & Advocate’s Roll, among other things.

The work on the present building of the High Court was completed in November 1878 and is 562 feet in length by 187 in breadth. The building, which is early English-Gothic was designed by Colonel J.A. Fuller, R.E. and was completed at a cost of Rs. 16,44,528 which was about Rs. 3000, less then the sanctioned estimate. The Judges have two private staircases on the western side of the building in the Octagon tower an either side of the porch. The main staircase and entrance for the general public are on the east. The High Court has at present a sanctioned strength of 75 Judges.

The Bombay Bar Association, one of the oldest in the country, is an association of lawyers practicing in the Bombay High Court. Mumbai, dubbed India’s financial city is the new name of the metropolitan city of Maharashtra while Bombay was its former name. It is c urrently the most-populated city in India.
