Pensions and housing to form agenda at SBL AGC breakout

The Council of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Section on Business Law has revealed highlights of its breakout session taking place on August 26, 2014, at the forthcoming Annual General Conference (AGC) of the NBA.

According to the Secretary of the Section, Olumide Akpata, the SBL breakout, which is further divided into two segments, will cover two vital areas of the economy – the Contributory Pension Scheme and Housing in Nigeria.

“A panel of discussants made up of experts in various fields will seek to address fundamental elements of the pension scheme and how it affects economic development in Nigeria, as well as the ‘Provision of Affordable Housing In Nigeria and How to bridge The Funding Gap,’ with regard to the general conference theme, “NIGERIA, A 100 YEARS AFTER,” Akpata said.

To tackle the subject of pension at the first breakout is Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, director-general, National Pension Commission, as lead speaker, with a panel that includes Kehinde Aina, director, Negotiation and Conflict Management Group (NCMG) and Managing Partner, Aina Blankson LP; Nick Opara-Ndudu, commissioner for internal resources/pension matters, Imo State; Misbahu Yola, chairman, Pension Operators Association of Nigeria (PenOp) and managing director/CEO, Legacy Pension Managers Limited; M. S. Muhammad, commission secretary/legal adviser, National Pension Commission, and Bayo Yusuf, managing director/CEO, UBA Custodian Limited.

Leading the discourse at the second breakout is Roland Igbinoba, president/CEO, Pison Housing Company, and managing director/CEO,

Federal Housing Authority Mortgage Bank, alongside Ken Njemanze, SAN, Principal Partner, Njemanze & Njemanze LP, Dame Aleruchi Cookey-Gam, administrator, Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, Iheukwumere Alaribe, commissioner for housing and urban development, Imo State, and Joseph Jibunoh, the divisional head of legal at Resort Savings and Loans plc. The session will be chaired by Eze Duruiheoma, SAN, chairman, National Population Commission.

 The SBL is the specialisation arm of the NBA, which aims to influence policy and business development. It promotes and enforces global standards in business law and corporate commercial practices in Nigeria.

Powered by its committees, the Section is set up to cover various areas and sectors of the economy, including Banking, Finance and Insolvency, Energy and Natural Resources, Environmental Law, Capital Markets, Intellectual Property, Aviation, Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Travel, Tourism and Hospitality, Law Practice Management, Employment and Industrial Relations, Infrastructure, Information and Communications Technology, Insurance, Maritime, Mergers, Acquisitions and Corporate Restructuring, Rail and Road Transportation, Taxation and a Young Lawyers’ committee that caters for younger practitioners.

The SBL annual general meeting/election of new council members to run the affairs of the Section for the next two years will follow immediately after the session.

The NBA AGC opens on Sunday, August 24, through to the 28, at the International Convention Centre, Owerri, Imo State. The theme, “NIGERIA, A 100 YEARS AFTER,” will address, among other things, the Political history and development of Nigeria, Constitutional reforms, Economic development, Educational development, Infrastructural issues, and Judicial reforms.
