Re NBA elections: Arewa Lawyers Forum adopt candidates
Arewa Lawyers Forum ( ALF), the umbrella body of lawyers in the Northern part of Nigeria, over the weekend adopted candidates for the forthcoming election of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
At the forum’s meeting which took place in Abuja, Steve Abar was adopted for the post of General Secretary, Ibrahim Y. Umar for First Vice -President, Muheeb Komolafe for Third Vice- President, Amina Ibrahim for Treasurer, R.O. Balogun for Legal Adviser and Mas’ud Alabelewe for welfare Secretary of the NBA.
Non-Arewa aspirants were also given an opportunity to give goodwill messages at this meeting, whilst canvassing for Arewa votes in the election . The Presidential candidates who addressed the meeting include, Osas Justy Erhabor, Funke Adekoya, SAN, Dele Adesina, SAN, Augustine Alegeh, SAN and Niyi Akintola, SAN.
Other contestants are, Andrew Ashong for the office of Third Vice-President, Akintokunbo Oluwole for Third-Vice President, , Francis Ekwere for First Vice President, Taiwo Taiwo for the office of Second Vice President, Barth Okoye -Aniche for General Secretary, Afam Osigwe for General Secretary, Wilson Oruma for Welfare Secretary, Kunle Edun, Gbolahan Gbadamosi and John Austin Unachukwu for Publicity Secretary, Chinwe Nwadike for Treasurer, C. C. Onwuzuluike for Legal Adviser. They were thereafter asked to leave the meeting for members to address their affairs.
Speaking to the Press, the Chairman of ALF, M. A. Abubakar expressed appreciation to members of the Forum who turned out en mass from different parts of the North to attend the meeting. He noted that since the change of leadership in the forum, it has grown from strength to strength and that is why they have continued to change meeting venues to accommodate their growing membership.
Abubakar said: “ You can see that we have been recording success after success since after we conducted our first election in the ALF, that is why we have kept changing our meeting venue so that it can accommodate our increasing numbers and allow us to conveniently deliberate on issues that affect Arewa.
On the adoption of candidates for the election, Abubakar said: “Except for two offices where we had to choose one candidate over the other, other candidates were adopted unopposed because we had only one candidate for each of them. He stated that the names of their adopted candidates would be forwarded to the other regional fora for their recognition and possible adoption.
On their position on other non Arewa contestants at the election, he stated that the Forum will hold its meeting on July 13, 2014 and they are likely to adopt non Arewa candidates for other offices that day.
The meeting was attended by leaders of the forum including the Minister for Special duties, Kabiru T. Turaki, SAN, chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, Mamman Mike Usman, SAN, Hassan Liman, SAN, Dr. Garba Tetengi, Prof. Maxwell Gidado and others.
