SBL conference to focus on economic development
As Lagos and the rest of the country set its sights on the economic and constitutional developments of Nigeria, plans are underway for the 2014 Annual Business Law Conference organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Section on Business Law (SBL).
The event slated to hold on the 25th through to the 27th of May 2014 would take place at the Atlantic Hall of the Eko Hotel & Suites in Victoria Island Lagos.
Speaking on the forthcoming conference, the Administrator of the section Endurance Uhumuavbi, informed LEGALBUSINESS, that the 2014 theme, “EXEMPLARY GOVERNANCE – ENHANCING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA” is an advancement of last year’s topic, which focused on security challenges in the country, Nigeria’s Presidential Amnesty Programme, Power Sector Reforms and a general view of the Nigerian Economy.
The Secretariat also confirmed that the SBL Council was currently working with its committees, ranging about 19, towards another world class conference; in the hope of influencing policies, business development, government action and the advancement of legal practice in Nigeria.
The conference which attracted key practitioners and business people around the world last year, played host to some of the finest commercial lawyers from foremost international law firms, such as Harold Paisner, Senior Partner at Berwin Leighton Paisner and White & Case Partner, Greg Stonefield, who spoke on “The Lawyer As Catalyst For Growth In An Emerging Economy.”
Expected at this year’s event are representatives of the business community, policy makers, regulators, legal and non-legal professionals, as well as key actors in the public and private sectors.
The three-day event will include a welcome Cocktail and the traditional Chairman’s Dinner with various other attractions included on both evenings.
Members and intending participants have been urged to take advantage of the on-going early bird registration which ends 30th April, 2014.
The Section on Business Law is the specialisation arm of the Nigerian Bar Association, which sees to the development of commercial law and specialized legal practice in Nigeria.
Over the years, the section has created a working environment for business lawyers within and outside Nigeria to network and engage on issues relevant to their field, with a thriving relationship between the business community and government institutions.

Similarly, the President of the International Bar Association (IBA has announced the opening of registrations for the 2014 annual conference scheduled to take place in Tokyo.
The event which takes place from October 19–24 in Tokyo will centre around various developing trends around the world.
Last year’s conference in Boston, saw more than 6,000 private practitioners, in–house counsel, human rights a
dvocates, judges, bar leaders, business leaders and government representatives gather for the Association’s unique blend of professional development, international networking and life–long relationship building.
Yearly, legal professionals around the world gather at this event to share experience, develop business and learn from one another. In the last 60 years, the IBA conference has brought together practitioners of every level, from virtually every jurisdiction in the world.
