Ad bodies wade into appointment of APCON chairman’s controversy

Advertising organisations in Nigeria have waded into the issue of the appointment of the chairman of Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON).

The bodies, comprising of Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN), Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria, Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), and Media Independents Association of Nigeria (MIPAN), are asking the government to be guided by the APCON Act in appointing the next chairman of the apex advertising regulatory body.

“As industry stakeholders, we have thoroughly investigated some reports on the appointment of one Ngozi Enyioma as APCON chairman. The APCON secretariat and sectoral bodies promptly advised the minister of information, Labaran Maku, that this was done in error. According to the Law setting up APCON, its council composition must conform to specific laws and regulations.

“The sectoral bodies therefore are appealing to the presidency to reverse the appointment because, according to the law, APCON chairman shall be a distinguished fellow of the profession to be appointed by the profession,” the said.
