Chi Foundation takes CSR to Lekki community, commissions water project
The community of Lekki in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos State, who has been drinking water from wells could not hide their joy last week when Chi Foundation changed the situation as it commissioned about N5 million water bore-hole project for the community.
In the community, mostly women sang and danced in appreciation of the project, which is the Foundation’s social responsibility initiative to reduce water borne diseases such as dysentery, diarrhoea, typhoid and cholera, among others, often contracted by members of the community through the untreated well water.
The joy in the faces of the members of the community is indicative of a relief and a shift to better life as good water is significant to human life.
The water project, according to the management of Chi Foundation, is installed with treatment facility and has backwash equipment.
While commissioning the project, the chairman of Chi Foundation, Oluranti Odubogun strongly believed that the project will be of immense benefit to the community.
Defending the choice of the community for the project, Odubogun, who is a bishop, said the entire peninsula in the area was referred to as Lekki, “so God has given this town the opportunity. It is God gift to the community of being the lead on this peninsula and therefore we believe that siting the project there is siting a project on the peninsula.”
He promised that the Foundation will maintain the project, which comes with a generator for next two years, and appealed to the community to protect the the project in order to sustain it for a long time.
Commending the Foundation on the project, the community chief Liasim Olumuyiwa appealed for the maintenance of the project.
BusinessDay gathered that Lekki as a name was derived from the Portuguese sailor named Lecqi who was a slave trade merchant in the area. “Because the community could not pronounce his name, they simply called him Lekki,” Femi Ogunbogun, a medical doctor from the area, told BusinessDay
Chi Foundation is set up by Chi Limited and associate companies of TGI Group, and in the last two years, the Foundation has sited about seven projects within the South-West region.
