PwC rewards journalists with N2.3m in maiden media excellence awards

Four journalists were awarded with cash prizes of N500,000 each in the maiden edition of PwC Media Excellence Awards 2016 which held at Landmark Events, in Lagos, on Friday last week.
Also consolation prizes worth N50, 000 each were given to seven journalists whose entries were adjudged top contenders.
Top winners on the night are Abiodun Eromosele of ThisDay newspaper who emerged winner in the Capital market category and Eromo Egbejule of Ventures Africa who won in the category of SME reporting. Other winners are Emmanuel Ogunsola of Techpoint NG in the Business and Economic reporting category and Anthony Matuluko won in the tax category.
A total of 55 entries were received. Business and Economy reporting category recrded 29 entries, 16 journalists submitted entries for SME reporting, 8 submitted entries for Capital Markets category and only 2 entries were recorded in the Tax reporting category.
According to the professional services firm, the objective of the award is to deepen capacity of journalist as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility and belief that good governance can be achieved only when journalists help to keep the rulers accountable.
“As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility in the past years, we have focused on building capacity for journalists through our Annual Capability Enhancement workshop for journalists and have trained over 60 journalists in the three years of its existence, we have decided to expand it to include awards that will celebrate excellence in reporting and motivate journalists to improve and take interest in business reporting which will enhance good governance,” said Tola Ogundipe, PwC Assurance Leader for West Africa.
Taiwo Oyedele, partner and West Africa Tax Lead, also a member of the panel of judges that includes ace broadcaster Soni Irabor, Andrew Nevin, advisory partner and chief economist at PwC, said that the entries were judged for balanced unbiased reporting, originality, relevance, organised research and use of language.
