Expert advocates digital training for SME operators
Winston Ikekeonwu, an IT expert, has said that Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) operators require support to leverage e-commerce in marketing their products for increased profitability.
This is contained in a statement signed by Ikekeonwu, CEO, align academy.com, which was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.
It said that according to a survey conducted by the company, many SMEs fail due to lack of guidance on business strategies to utilise in a challenged economy.
“Contrary to popular opinion, today’s business failures are not necessarily caused by lack of capital but by the inability of most entrepreneurs to effectively market themselves, using the various e-channels available.
“Many entrepreneurs said they feel they are not getting the support and guidance they need to grow in the digital marketplace.
“With all the opportunities the Internet offers, it is very easy to get distracted.
“That’s why small business owners are looking for clear directions on where to start marketing and how to go about it the right way,” Ikekeonwu said.
The statement noted that with effective digital marketing techniques and 86 million active Internet users in the country, SMEs could boost their customer base globally and attract more funding for their businesses.
It, therefore, urged the government and the private sector to improve digital training for SMEs, to increase the sector’s contribution to the GDP.
