FG to introduce courses on products standards
In order to increase standards consciousness among Nigerians, the Federal Government is making plans to introduce courses that will deal extensively with products standards and quality in higher institutions.
“We are working on introduction of courses on standards in universities in the country. When people begin to study standards in response to its existence as a proper field of learning, the evolution of knowledgeable people in society, who are compliant to quality standards is systematically attained,’’ said Olusegun Aganga, minister of industry, trade and investment, during the second Lafarge National Dialogue on Building Collapse held in Abuja.
According to him, the Federal Government has now sorted out the recently raging cement debate, which linked product quality to building collapses, by putting into consideration what is good for consumers and Nigerians, while making preparations to publish the reviewed standards for cement industry.
To facilitate adherence to international standards, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has refurbished laboratories for products testing in Lagos, Enugu and Kaduna, while plans have reached advanced stage to build a metrology laboratory to facilitate calibration and traceability of products in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), said Aganga.
