Manufacturers bemoan 8.3hr/pd power outage in industrial estates

Under the aegis of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), according to Economic Review released for the second half of 2013 (H2 2013), key players in the real sector lamented rise in power outage to 8.3 hours per day in most industrial zones, from 7.8 hours per day obtained by the first half of the same year (H1 2013).

“In the second half of 2013, there was an average electricity of 8.3 hours in most of the industrial estates in the country. The corresponding period (H2 2012) however recorded a much higher figure of 15.9 percent,’’ says MAN in its Economic Review released recently.

“The study revealed that manufacturers are still grappling with high tariffs under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) designed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), despite reduced availability of power supply,’’ MAN says.

MAN’s data show that manufacturers in Edo/Delta had an average of 5.0 hr/pd outage in H2 2013, as against 5.0 hr/pd obtained in H1 2013 and 16.5 hr/pd recorded in H2 2012.

Those in Imo/Abia had an average of 7.5 hr/pd outage in H2 2013. This compares positively with 9.6 hr/pd reported in H1 2013 and 15.0 recorded in H2 2012. On the other hand, those in Ovo/Ondo/ Osun/Ekiti areas had an average outage of 10.7 hr/pd in H2 2013 as against 7.7 hr/pd obtained in H1 2013 and 17.0 in H2 2012.

In Kano/Bompai/Sharada/Challawa areas, they incurred 9 hr/pd outage in H2 2013 as against 12.8 hr/pd obtained in H1 2013 and 20.6 recorded in H2 2012.

In Kaduna, manufacturers had 9.3 hr/pd outage in H2 2013 as against 8.0 in H1 2013 and 12.0 in H2 2012.

Ogun manufacturers had comparatively lower outage, recording 4.1 hr/pd in H2 2013 and 5.2 hr/pd in H1 2013. This also compares positively with 20.0 hr/pd reported by the end of H2 2012. In Apapa, Lagos, power outage was 6.2 hr/pd in H2 2013 as against 5.8 hr/pd in H1 2013 and 19.4 hr/pd in H2 2012.

In Anambra/Enugu states, power outage was 8 hr/pd in H2 2013 as against 3.3 hr/pd in H1 2013 and 11.9 hr/pd in H2 2012. Moreover, in Bauchi/Benue/Plateau states grouped together, outage was 11 hr/pd on the average in H2 2013, compared to 10.1 in H1 2013 and 13.1 in H2 2012.

In Rivers State, manufacturers had 9.8 hr/pd outage as against 8.1 hr/pd in H1 2013 and 12.1 hr/pd in H2 2012. Also, in Kwara State, there was 8.2 hr/pd power outage on the average in H2 2013, though there was no record of H1 2013’s outage status.
